Key Features:

  • Cheer Duo teaches students how to gain XP with games or non language curriculum like math and reading.

  • Students may have more competency and connection with other modules, thus providing an opportunity for autonomous exploration. 

  • Triggered by students with 0XP for 2 weeks in a row. 

  • Triggered to highlight new games and non language courses.

  • Before initiating lesson student is told how many rounds are required to rise in the leaderboard

  • Completion of lesson triggers  micro-interaction zipping up leaderboard.

US Literacy Issue

Currently 54% of American adults read below a 7th grade level. The pandemic, digital distractions, and the "reading wars," began in the early 2000s, are perhaps a few causes of this issue. However, U.S. test scores continue to plummet and adult issues with literacy continue to be discovered.

Competitors

There are many digital literacy apps, however not one platform exists that combines high quality language and math learning.

 

LexiaCore is a literacy app for 3rd-6th graders and Lexia Power Up focuses on middle to high school literacy. The curriculum prioritizes long learning sessions, not bite-sized learning, Duolingo's specialty.

Duo ABC

Currently Duolingo only engages preschool and elementary readers with Duo ABC.

 

However, by adding Reading, Writing, and Spelling to existing Music and Math curriculums, Duolingo not only provides more opportunities for self-determination but engages another audience, middle schoolers to adults struggling with literacy.

  1. Students spend weeks at the bottom of the leaderboard with 0 XP points.

  2. Students are unaware of additional opportunities to gain XP points and rise in ranking.

  3. Students don't find Duolingo or the leaderboard engaging.

Autonomous Play

Math, Music, adrenaline inducing short matching games... Duolingo already provides these opportunities but never explicitly tells students how they improve leaderboard standing.
